Defensive Revolver

This class is designed to improve the student’s ability to efficiently operate a double action (DA) or double action-only (DAO) revolver in defensive situations. Emphasis will be placed on shooting fundamentals, presentations from the holster, administrative handling, reloading techniques, and defensive mindset and tactics. Students will complete many exercises with inert (“dummy”) ammunition to enhance learning
and safety, and to reduce ammunition requirements and expenses. Therefore, each student will need suitable dummy ammunition for their revolver to participate in this class (see Required Equipment, below).

Class Prerequisites
This is a Basic-to-Intermediate level class, and extensive revolver experience is not required to attend. Students will simply need to understand the basics of how to operate their revolver and support equipment and be able to follow instructor directions while adhering to firearms safety rules. The ideal student will have prior formal training experience with a handgun, but the class is designed in a “building block” fashion that will accommodate shooters without this experience, provided they have good firearms safety habits, and an aptitude for learning. This is not a good class for a first-time shooter, or for an inexperienced shooter who requires a lot of
individual assistance and supervision.

Required Equipment
The following equipment will be required to attend this class:
1. A well maintained, properly functioning, double action (DA) or double action-only (DAO) revolver;
2. At least two (2) loading devices that are verified to fit and function in the revolver (i.e.,
round-body speedloaders, or “strip” loaders);
3. At least two (2) cylinders’ worth of inert (no powder, no primer) “dummy” ammunition
(i.e., 12 dummy rounds total, for a 6-shot revolver);
4. A minimum of 200 rounds of live ammunition;
5. A properly fitting, inside or outside the waistband, belt holster, designed to be worn in the strong-side or appendix position, and a suitable belt;
6. Wraparound eye protection (including protective side shields for prescription eyeglass
wearers) and suitable hearing protection (ear muffs and/or plugs);
7. A toothbrush and/or small rag, to clean debris from the revolver during breaks in the
course of fire;
8. Sturdy shoes, and clothing appropriate for expected environmental conditions,
outdoors;
9. Sufficient food and water for the day (nothing available on-site or within a close
distance, be prepared for a “working lunch” lecture).

Optional Equipment
The following optional equipment is recommended:
1. A second revolver, to serve as a backup/spare (in case of mechanical failure), or as a full-size trainer (for students who may not want to shoot a small-frame revolver all day);
2. Suitable pouch(es) for spare ammunition and loading devices, if the student will not be placing them in a readily-accessible pocket;
3. Electronic hearing protection, to make it easier to hear range commands;
4. Extra ammunition;
5. Gun cleaning and lubrication supplies;
6. Properly fitting holsters for other carry positions that the student may use, such as
pocket, ankle, shoulder, purse, bellyband, or crossdraw. NOTE: These holsters will not
be used in live fire exercises during class, but students may receive additional
instruction, and be permitted to practice presentations from these alternate carry
positions with unloaded firearms, as time permits;
7. Notepad and pen;
8. Folding camp chair or stool.

About the Instructor
Mike Wood is a retired military pilot with a passion for teaching and a passion for revolvers. As the son of a Highway Patrolman who was a firearms instructor for his agency, Mike grew up on police ranges when the revolver was still King in law enforcement, and paid close attention to the lessons learned by the officers of that era. Mike is a certified law enforcement firearms instructor in Handgun, Shotgun and Patrol Rifle disciplines, and actively teaches both law enforcement and armed citizen students throughout California. He’s the author of the book, Newhall Shooting: A Tactical Analysis (the definitive study of the infamous, 1970 gunfight that revolutionized police training, and spurred the “Officer Survival” movement of the ‘70s and ‘80s), and the Senior Editor at RevolverGuy.com (a website dedicated to revolver-specific education, training, and entertainment). He’s excited to have the opportunity to work with the LMS Defense family.

A deposit of 50% of the course fee is required to reserve your seat in the class, normally collected within a week after registration. The remaining balance will subsequently be collected 5-7 days before the class.

Student initiated cancelations at least 14 days prior to class date are refundable MINUS a $25 per day processing fee.
Student cancelations less than 14 days prior to class are NON REFUNDABLE.

Students should expect classes to run rain or shine, though LMS reserves the right to cancel due to extreme weather (cold, snow).
LMS initiated cancelations will receive a full refund.

Refunds may be applied as credits at the student's discretion. Credits remain valid for 2 years.
